  • He studied medicine at the Athens University Medical School and trained in general medicine in British hospitals and in cardiology at the Oxford University hospital. Received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Linacre College) and was member of the academic staff of the University of Oxford in the Department of the "Regius Professor of Medicine" under the pioneer in the study of hypertension, George Pickering. He was Assistant Professor at the University of California in San Francisco at the Cardiovascular Research Institute under Julius Comroe, in the Department of Cardiology under Maurice Sokolow and deputy to the Director of the hemodynamics laboratory, Malcolm McIlroy.
  • In Greece he was Associate Professor and chief cardiologist in the lst Department of Propedeutic Medicine under George Daikos, and he set up in the Laiko Hospital the first Hypertension Clinic in Greece and also the Cardiac Research Laboratory. He became Director of the Department of Cardiology in the Laiko Hospital and then Director of the Hypertension Clinic and the 2nd Department of Cardiology at the private hospital "Hygeia".
  • In England and the United States his research and publications were mainly on the physiology of the circulation of the lung.
  • In Greece he made the first survey of blood pressure in a sample of 5000 of a Greek population in the regions of Boeotia and Thessaly which showed that Greeks have the same distribution as other western populations (Thesis of E. Zimalis). He secured the participation of Greece for the first time in a multicentre therapeutic study of hypertension (HAPPHY trial). In the 1970's he brought together a Hypertension Working Group that became the forerunner of the Hellenic Society for the Study of Hypertension.
  • From the 1980's he is member of Steering Committees of International Organizations for the therapy of myocardial infarction and acute coronary syndromes and also for epidemiological and preventive studies (International Studies of Infarct Survival ISIS, Organization to Assess Strategies for Ischemic Syndromes OASIS, and IRMA, INTERHEART, ACTIVE and ONTARGET studies). In this capacity he introduced and coordinated in Greece more than 12 international studies in which all the university and large state hospitals participated.
  • He is a member of the professional societies: International Society of Hypertension, Council on High Blood Pressure Research of the American Heart Association, Council on Epidemiology and Prevention (International Society and Federation of Cardiology), European Society of Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
